San Diego used to be known primarily for the beaches and tourist attractions, but in the last decade or so the city has gained fame for its indie beer scene. From small microbreweries like Green Flash to the now-world-famous Stone Brewery, San Diego has something for every beer lover. Even home brewers are getting into the spirit!
Unfortunately, though there are plenty of home-brewing kits on the market, most of them—even beginner kits—are rather pricey. But at San Diego Drums & Totes, we offer several products you can use in your DIY home-brewing kit for a fraction of the cost:
You’ll need two large buckets (5-gallon minimum) for your home brewery: one for fermenting and one for bottling. At most homebrew supply outlets, 6-gallon buckets without lids go for around $15 each. At San Diego Drums & Totes, we sell food-grade plastic buckets in a variety of sizes: 5-gallon ($4.50), 6-gallon ($6) and 7-gallon ($9). Lids for those sizes are only $1.50 each.
Most buckets don’t come with spigots already attached, so you’ll have to drill a hole and install on your own for easy bottling at the end of the brewing process. Plastic spigots at homebrew supply sites start at about $15, but we have comparable spigots for $8.
Siphons and Pumps
After the fermentation process, home brewers will need a way to transfer the brew from one bucket to another. Basic auto-siphons run about $15 at brewing suppliers, but for just a few dollars more you can get a much stronger pump siphon at San Diego Drums & Totes. For more advanced home brewers, electric pumps can be used in place of siphoning equipment, and while specialized brewing pumps start at around $150, we offer rotary pumps for $30 and submersible pumps for $79.99.
