Does anyone ever turn down free money? We’ve never met anyone who would!
Did you know that in San Diego, you can get free money just by purchasing a rain barrel?
Yes, really.
By way of its rebate program, The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California rewards residents and businesses for using rain barrels. They do this because the use of rain barrels helps reduce runoff pollution in local waterways, contributes to erosion prevention efforts, and cuts down on the amount of water that has to undergo expensive sewage treatment.
Rebates start at $75 per rain barrel!
Before you apply for the rebate, there are a couple of guidelines you’ll need to keep in mind. In order to qualify for the San Diego Rain Barrel Rebate, your rain barrel must be:
- Purchased as an entire rain barrel. It cannot be homemade.
- Able to hold at least 50 gallons of rain.
- One of four or fewer rain barrels per application/address.
You’ll also want to be sure your rain barrel is set up for the intended purpose of rain collection, and that you follow all the guidelines for safety, which you can find on the SoCalWaterSmart website.
How to apply for the San Diego Rain Barrel Rebate
Once you have purchased your rain barrel, go to SoCalWaterSmart.com. Click the link at the top that says, “Rebates.” When the page opens, you’ll see a bar on the right with two links: one to estimate your rebate, and one to apply for your rebate. Click the blue link that says, “Apply for Rebate.”
From there, click the links through the following five steps of the application:
Step 1: Customer information – This includes the address of the rain barrel installation and the address for where you want your rebate check (free money!) sent.
Step 2: Device measurements – This is where you’ll input your rain barrel size(s).
Step 3: Purchase information – Here, you’ll provide the model number of your rain barrel, as well as the dates of purchase and installation. (If you have not already purchased your rain barrel, you can still complete the application, and they’ll hold it for 60 days – or until you provide the purchase and installation information.)
Step 4: Terms and conditions – This is where you accept the terms and conditions required for receiving your rain barrel rebate.
Step 5: Done. Now all you have to do is think about how you’ll spend your free money!
